With this renovation project, we’ve reimagined a single town home into a multi-family complex. The resulting design features a single 2-bedroom residential unit on each of 4 stories, including a basement unit with a recess garden. With a backyard, second-floor deck, and a roof deck, our spacious plan provides each unit with its own private outdoor space.
To balance the allure of our contemporary design with the original row house’s historic character, we kept the original facade on the two top floors, but updated it with a white stain, black trimmings, and new window frames. On the ground floor, we moved the front entrance to ensure easier circulation between the units. For a really unique introduction to this space, we
reimagined ground floor facade with large-scale windows and metal paneling. A new set of metal steps define the indented entrance, and make for a sleek, light alternative to your average concrete doorstep.
By making an extension at the rear of the existing site, we made the bedrooms in each unit more spacious but maintained harmony with the surrounding architecture. Throughout each step of the design process, our goal was to imagine a new life for an existing property with lots of charm and potential. Our design is the perfect compromise between getting along and standing out.
